Mississauga Dental Deep Cleaning
Treat gum diseasebelow the gumline
A dental deep cleaning, also called scaling and root planing, removes plaque and tartar below the gumline to treat gum disease and protect the tissues supporting your teeth. At Heritage House Dental, we evaluate your gums first to determine if deep cleaning is the right treatment.
What is a dental deep cleaning?
A dental deep cleaning is a non-surgical treatment for gum disease. It cleans areas below the gumline that a routine dental cleaning can’t reach.
Treatment includes:
- ZScaling: Removes plaque and tartar from your teeth and periodontal pockets.
- ZRoot planing: Smooths the root surfaces to remove buildup and create a cleaner surface for your gums to heal against.
If gum disease progresses, it can damage the gum tissue and bone supporting your teeth. Treating it earlier can help protect your long-term oral health.

Signs you may needa deep cleaning
You may need scaling and root planing if you have:
- ZBleeding gums when brushing or flossing
- ZRed, swollen, or tender gums
- ZGums pulling away from your teeth
- ZPersistent bad breath
- ZLoose teeth or changes in your bite
- ZDeep periodontal pockets
- ZTartar buildup below the gumline
- ZSigns of bone loss on dental x-rays
What to expect during scaling and root planing
1. Gum health evaluation
We examine your teeth and gums, measure periodontal pocket depths, and review appropriate dental imaging to understand the extent of your gum disease.
2. Local anesthetic
We can numb the treatment area before cleaning below the gumline to help keep you comfortable.
3. Scaling and root planing
We remove plaque and hardened tartar from the tooth and root surfaces, then smooth the roots where needed.
Depending on how many areas require treatment, your deep cleaning may take one appointment or multiple visits.
4. Aftercare and follow-up
We’ll explain how to care for your gums at home and let you know when to return so we can evaluate how your gums responded to treatment.
What happensafter a deep cleaning?
To support healing:
- ZBrush gently twice a day with a soft-bristled toothbrush
- ZClean between your teeth as directed
- ZUse any rinse recommended by your dental team
- ZChoose softer foods temporarily if your gums feel sensitive
- ZKeep your recommended follow-up appointments
Deep cleaning vs. regular teeth cleaning
Regular dental cleaning
- ZHelps maintain healthy teeth and gums
- ZRemoves plaque and tartar around accessible tooth surfaces
- ZForms part of routine preventive dental care
Dental deep cleaning
- ZTreats gum disease
- ZCleans below the gumline
- ZRemoves buildup from root surfaces
- ZMay be recommended when periodontal pockets, bleeding, or bone loss are present
If you’re unsure which type of cleaning you need, start with a dental exam. We’ll evaluate your gums before recommending treatment.
“Gum disease doesn’t always cause obvious pain. When we recommend a deep cleaning, the goal is to control the disease and give patients a healthier foundation to maintain going forward.”
Why treatinggum disease matters
Gum disease affects the tissues that support your teeth. Without treatment, it can progress and contribute to gum recession, bone loss, and loose teeth.
Scaling and root planing can help control active gum disease before more advanced treatment becomes necessary.
If gum disease has already contributed to tooth loss, Heritage House Dental also offers dental implants in Mississauga for appropriate candidates.
